A new year, a new you! This is not going to be a post about how I think resolutions are rubbish and you shouldn’t have to wait for a new year blah blah. I actually think there’s nothing wrong with setting goals at the start of the year. Especially if it leads to a happier, healthier lifestyle (the most common resolutions normally are). However, you may be great at setting goals, but not so good at sticking to them. The following post if my guide to sticking to your new year resolutions. These are methods I use to stick to the plan.
Write It Down
This is as simple as it gets. Write down your goals, stick it on your fridge, put it in your wallet or in a diary. I want you to physically write out what it is you want to achieve. By putting pen to paper you are making a commitment to yourself, for this reason I DO NOT want you to type it on your phone! It is simple to press delete and undo your commitment.
Give it a go, try writing out what your thoughts for the year are. I reckon they will probably change as you think about how to word/structure the goal.
Show Somebody
Once you’ve written it down, show somebody, show the world, it really doesn’t matter who. Get it out there and shout about what you want to achieve. Social media is a good place to do this. Why not try posting a pic of your 2018 goals you’ve just written down. It’s there for all to see then, no shying away.
Breakdown the Goal Itself
Now your goals are out there, you’ve committed to them. The hard part is now sticking to them! The likelihood is you’ve been ambitious and there’s nothing wrong with this. However, the more ambitious, the more important this next stage is.
Take each individual goal and break them down into manageable chunks. Come up with a plan of attack, how are you going to master these tasks. If you wish, you can create SMART goals;
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Realistic
- Timed

Find a Buddy
By now you should have a solid idea and understanding of what it is you want to achieve. You should also have an idea of how you’re going to get there! You’re all set, but don’t get me wrong there will be times that you fall off the wagon.
A great way to avoid this or to ensure you hop straight back on is to have a buddy. Find a friend, family member or social media user with similar goals and help each other. This is a great way to keep yourself and others accountable.

Trust the Process
Arguably the hardest part. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was your own personal road to success. Trust the path you laid out when you broke down your goals. It won’t be straight and there will be bumps along the way. However, trust the process and keep chipping away at it.
